The web turns thirty

The World Wide Web was created 30 years ago, on March 12, 1989, in Switzerland. To celebrate the anniversary of this invention, which has become an essential part of our daily lives, Google unveiled a special Doodle.

More precisely, March 12, 1989, marks the day when the first document describing the concept of the World Wide Web was written by computer scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Their goal was to make document sharing easier and more efficient.

The project was described simply as "an information management system" by Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web. He assembled a team of computer scientists who worked together to bring this groundbreaking idea to life.

### Do Not Confuse the Web with the Internet

Although the terms are often used interchangeably, the Web and the Internet are not the same thing.

Simply put, the Web is a way of navigating and accessing information on the Internet.

The word "Internet" comes from the combination of "Interconnected" and "Network," meaning an interconnected network. It is the global infrastructure that allows servers and computers to communicate and exchange information, whether through websites, emails, music streaming, or video content.

The World Wide Web, commonly known as the Web, is a tool that allows users to access pages available on the Internet through a web browser and a connected device such as a computer, tablet, or smartphone. It is based on a collection of protocols and technologies that make online information accessible to everyone.

Although the Web was created in 1989, it was during the 1990s that it became widely accessible to the public. It entered homes through dial-up modems—with their unforgettable connection sound—and later became an integral part of everyday life when Internet access became available on smartphones.

Today, we do almost everything online. We book rides, reserve vacation rentals, purchase airline tickets, listen to music, follow the news, communicate with family and friends, and find our way using navigation services. Every day, billions of pieces of data are exchanged across the Internet.
