Les ventes en ligne flambe
In the third quarter of 2022, e-commerce revenue increased by 16.2% year-on-year. Online sales even reached a total of €19.8 billion, according to the French E-Commerce and Distance Selling Federation (Fevad).
The organization attributes this performance to the rebound in household consumption, as well as the late timing of the summer sales this year. This shift postponed part of the revenue to July.
Additionally, the number of active e-commerce sites increased to 210,830 (+8%), representing more than 15,000 additional sites compared to the previous year.
The annual revenue of French e-commerce reached €19.8 billion in Q3 2022. The volume of transactions also grew by 20.4%, totaling over 300 million transactions for the quarter, compared to 250 million in Q3 2016.
The average shopping cart value fell slightly to €66 (-3.4% year-on-year), down from €68 in Q2 2022. However, purchase frequency increased, approaching 10 transactions per online shopper.
Similarly, the amount spent per buyer rose to €650, which is €55 more than last year.
Growth Drivers:
The clothing & footwear and furniture & home decor sectors drove the growth. According to the ICE 100 index, which tracks the performance of leading sites with comparable data, B2C product sales saw a significant increase in July (+20%) and August (+13%).
B2B sales also experienced strong growth, rising 20% year-on-year. Professionals are projecting €15.8 billion in online revenue for the Christmas season.
Revenue from mobile devices surged, up 48%, with smartphones now accounting for one in every three sales.
E-tourism also saw growth for the third consecutive quarter, rising +14.5%, mainly due to the overall recovery of the tourism market since the start of the year.
Marketplace volumes increased by 16% this quarter, representing on average 28% of the total online revenue of sites hosting these marketplaces.
Overall, professionals are betting on €15.8 billion in online sales for Christmas. The €80 billion revenue milestone is expected to be surpassed in 2022, with growth likely to remain around 14% for the year.
